PASAY—Gab Dy has been known for having a clean look early into his mixed martial arts career.
But on Wednesday night, a different Dy showed up at Resorts World Manila during the open workout and pre-fight press conference for Brave 22: Storm of Warriors.
The former Pacific Xtreme Combat star, who made his way to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, has grown some beard and even a styled mustache.
But when asked by Dugout Philippines about the new look, he said that it was just his discretion.
"Gusto ko lang ng bagong look before the fight. Naisip ko lang. Nakita ko sa Google: 'Uy! Maganda pala itong ganitong itsura.' Tri-ny ko lang," said Dy. "Ayun! Bagay."
However, he admitted that he will make his first fight under Brave in two years as a different person following a forgetful stint with the UFC.
"Mas disciplined ako ngayon. Sa UFC kasi, medyo naging undisciplined ako," continued Dy, who went 1-3 with the American-based league.
He further bared that he had to go away with unnecessary extracurricular activities like alcohol for what would be his second lease of life in a major MMA promotion.
"Ngayon, focused na ako," added Dy, who later said that he swung back to training just three days after a knockout win against Izzeddine Al Derbani on Jan. 26 in Abu Dhabi.
In his return to Brave, Dy will face off with Mehmosh Raza of Pakistan on Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Raza holds the Brave record for the fastest submission, forcing Filipino foe Arben Escayo to tap out in just 23 seconds.
But Dy, the son of Filipino boxing legend Rolando Navarette, believes he can beat Raza even on the ground.
"I don't believe he's better on the ground sa akin. I have a purple belt in jiujitsu. I know how to wrestle," Dy further said. "My level in MMA is different than Escayo. I believe I'm still better on the ground. Papatunayan ko yun."
But a stand-up finish remains his top goal.
"My goal is to knock him out," Dy quipped.
