MANILA--Congressman Mikee Romero looks to put up a health benefit package for active and retired athletes.

"Athletes' bodies undergo more stress and strain, both physically and mentally. This is why they have special needs and more so when they retire," Romero explained," Romero, the national polo team captain and owner of Philippine Basketball Association side NorthPort, explained his decision to bat for the sportsmen's health packages.

The 1-PACMAN Party List representative is one of the authors of Universal Health Care Law, which was recently signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte.

Romero hopes that he will get a huge help from PhilHealth in making the sports benefit package possible.

"Kokonsultahin ko ang PhilHealth upang makahanap kami ng paraan," Romero further said.

Once the athletes' health benefit plan is now set, his next plan is an awareness drive to all current and past athletes, whether they are in the professional, school varsity, or in the grassroots level.

"We will coordinate with PhilHealth, the Philippine Sports Commission, Department of Education, and Commission on Higher Education on rolling out the registration and benefits awareness drive for athletes, especially those in the provinces," Romero specifically bared.
