La Consolacion-Manila, PCU score upsets in Fr. Martin's Cup preseason

MANILA--Upsets marred the seniors division of the 25th Fr. Martin's Cup Summer League presented by Resorts World Manila, Bedans 62-66, and Cocolife as La Consolacion-Manila and Philippine Christian University registered victories on Friday at the San Beda Gym.

La Consolacion-Manila posted the day's biggest shocker, beating Far Eastern University, 85-79, in the main game.

Thurlough Grealy and Jesse Bardaje came alive in the final quarter, combining for 21 of the Blue Royals' 27 points dropped on the Tamaraws to pull the upset.

Grealy scored on tough layups to keep La Consolacion-Manila afloat, while Bardaje completed the game-deciding four-point play with 43.5 seconds that helped seal the upset.

Bardaje, who actually capped a hot 17-5 start for the Blue Royals before coming up huge on the clutch again, finished with a game-high 26 points. Grealy added 20 markers of his own.

RJ Abarrientos, who led the Tamaraws' recovery from the slow start to even take a nine-point second quarter lead, had 22 points, but the Royals' resiliency paid off as the Tams fizzled in the end.

In the other seniors game, PCU dropped the upset ax on Arellano with a 72-69 win.

The Dolphins broke loose in the third quarter, going on a 14-0 run in the first 6:32 of the period and eventually opened a 55-38 lead after the quarter.

However, they still had to withstand the Chiefs' fourth quarter push, which turned out to be a bit too late.

Yves Sazon caught fire for PCU, leading the team with 37 points. Archie Concepcion was the only Arellano player in double digits scoring-wise with 10 markers.

Meanwhile, San Beda's high school teams suffered contrasting blowout results in the juniors division.

The Red Cubs Taytay's first team made quick work of the AMA Junior Titans via a wire-to-wire 131-70 win.

Rhayyan Amsali put up 19 points, while Tony Ynot added 18 for San Beda-Taytay-A. Christian Germino put up 16 markers for AMA.

However, the Red Cubs B squad fell prey to the La Consolacion-Manila Junior Royals, 64-91.

Christian Alonzo led La Consolacion-Manila's own start-to-finish rout with 18 points. Mauri Fernandez scored 16 markers for San Beda-Manila.
