Balkman goes on birthday barrage as Mighty Sports continues early Jones Cup surge with rout of Japan

MANILA—Mighty Sports continued to roll in the Jones Cup, blasting Japan, 94-59, at the Changhua County Gymnasium on Sunday.

Despite a surprise surge from Japan in which it held a 12-5 lead midway through the first quarter, Mighty Sports worked its way out of the woods by finishing the first on a 17-5 run, holding Japan to just nine points in the second, dropping 31 points in the third, and outscoring Japan, 25-10, in the fourth.

On his birthday, Renaldo Balkman made 27 points on 10-of-16 shooting, 12 rebounds, one assist, two blocks, and one steal for Mighty Sports, which moved up to 3-0 in the standings.

Eugene Phelps added 19 points on 6-of-10 field goals, six rebounds, two steals, and one block.

Next up for Mighty Sports is University of British Columbia on Monday.

Flippin Koh and Haruta Ogawa each made 10 markers for Japan, which fell to 1-1 in the standings.
