Mapua records 1st win at expense of Arellano

By Xy-Zha Cabanlong

PASAY CITY - The Mapua Cardinals ended their 5-game losing skid in high spirits as they battled to a win against NCAA Season 95 hosts Arellano Chiefs, 73-64, at the Cuneta Astrodome, Saturday afternoon.

Laurenz Victoria put up a stellar performance for the Cardinals, chipping in 29 points to lead all scorers in the game.

In the get-go, both teams were neck and neck in terms of claiming the lead. Arellano scored the first point of the ball game with a triple that was later on equalised by Mapua.

The Cardinals and the Chiefs were barely inseparable in the first quarter, with either teams exchanging 1-point leads or tangled up in a deadlock, but the Chiefs managed to escape, owning a 3-point lead as the opening quarter ended, 15-12.

Arellano owned the second quarter, proving that the hosts wanted to take this game away from the winless Cardinals, leading as much as 6 points.

However, Mapua was able to recover trimming the lead to 2, 35-33, at halftime.

The second half told a different story as the Cardinals exploded, leaving the Chiefs at close range but were able to walk away with the win.

Archie Concepcion lead the Chiefs in scoring as he finished off with 13 points while Alcoriza tallied 10 points.
