Ceres Negros places one foot on PFL crown after edging Kaya Iloilo in tense clash

By Ivan Saldajeno

BINAN--Ceres Negros essentially zeroed in on the PFL title after downing Kaya Iloilo, 2-0, in their third meeting of the season at the Binan Football Stadium on Wednesday.

Mike Ott opened the scoring for Ceres Negros with a 17th minute goal off an OJ Porteria feed.

Porteria then scored one of his own in the 30th minute with a close-range shot.

However, drama ensued just before halftime as Super Herrera and Jordan Mintah both got hurt during an aerial battle.

But with both players roughing each other during the play, they were both sent off, much to the chagrin of Herrera, who was stretchered off after apparently getting hit in the head.

Herrera will miss Ceres Negros' return to the said venue on Sunday as Stallion Laguna, which drew with Mendiola, 0-0, later Wednesday at the Aboitiz Pitch in Lipa, will host the defending league champ.

Despite Ceres Negros losing one of its key defenders, Roland Muller still achieved a clean sheet at the bars as Kaya Iloilo could not find its offense going without its prime scorer, who will sit out Kaya Iloilo's first home game of the season against Air Force also on Sunday.

With the win, Ceres Negros (46 points) widened its gap against Kaya Iloilo (37) for the top spot in the league table to nine points with eight matches left in their season.
