Gilas Women stay in Division A of FIBA Women's Asia Cup after zapping India in relegation playoff

IMUS—Gilas Pilipinas Women kept their place in the first division of the FIBA Women's Asia Cup after edging India, 92-78, in their battle for seventh place at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday night.

In what was essentially a relegation playoff with the loser going back to Division B, Gilas Women went off to a hot start, opening a 12-point lead against the hosts, 28-16, after the first quarter.

India, however, threatened in the second quarter, drawing to within three, 38-41, at halftime.

Gilas Women, however, recovered in the second half and finished off India with a 29-point fourth quarter.

Janine Pontejos led Gilas Women with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Khate Castillo added 15 points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Shireen Vijay Limaye posted 23 markers, six rebounds, six dimes, three steals, and one block for India, which suffered the relegation in the tournament it is hosting.
