TAGUIG--For the first time ever, the Philippine flag waved the highest in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.

Caloy Yulo became the first Filipino gold medalist of the said event after winning the final of the floor exercise at the Hanns Martin Schleyer Hall in Stuttgart late Saturday night.

Yulo bettered from his bronze medal finish last year by topping the difficulty and execution categories for a total of 15.3 points.

His routine included a full-twisting double layout, piked double front-half, 3 1/2 to barani, and a triple twist dismount.

Artem Dolgopyat of Israel, who tumbled a Zapata (barani in, full out), 2 1/2 to double-twisting front; double-double; and half-in, half-out in his own routine, shared the top honors with Yulo in execution as they both tallied 8.8 points.

However, Yulo's tumbles proved to be tougher to perform as he scored 6.5 points in the difficulty section, just 0.1 point ahead of Dolgopyat (6.4).

"I'm super happy. I didn't expect to win this medal. I'm crying on the inside," Yulo admitted via a news release from FIG.

Xiao Ruoteng of China won the bronze after scoring 14.933 points.
