MANILA— Arnis sustained its winning form with three more
golds in the second day of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games at the Angeles
University Foundation (AUF) Gym in Angeles City.
Picking up where they left off yesterday, the Pinoy
arnisadors cashed in three of the four golds in the men’s Full Contact Padded
Stick event.
Elmer Manlapas got the day’s first gold by beating Vietnam’s
Nguyen Duc Tru in the featherweight class, while Jesfer Hurique doubled the output with a
victory over another Viet bet in Van Cong Quoc in th bantamweight division.
Carloyd Tejada then defeated Vuong Thanh Tung also of Vietnam in the welterweight
division for the third gold medal.
Billy Joel Valenzuela,meanwhile, settled for the silver
after falling at the hands of Yong Menly of Cambodia in the lightweight finals.
The Philippines now has a total of eight golds, two silvers,
and two bronzes, comfortably ahead of bitter rivals Vietnam (3-6-3 medal
count). They hope to add more golds today as the women’s padded stick events are
on-going as of this writing.
The arnis competitions will be held until tomorrow.
