Batang Pier stun Gin Kings in Governor's Cup semis opener

MANILA - NorthPort kicked start their quest in the PBA Governor's Cup semifinals on a high note, defeating the heavily-favoured Barangay Ginebra, 124-90, Saturday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Garvo Lanete was a revelation for the Batang Pier as he exploded in the crucial 4th period, scoring 21 points in the quarter alone - mostly from beyond the arc.

Scoreless in the first half and only had 3 points beside his name in the stat sheet for the entirety of the 3rd period, Lanete let go of 6 triples that allowed NorthPort's advantage to blossom to 30 points from just 10, 78-68, by the end of the 3rd Quarter.

Michael Qualls led all scorers by finishing with 38 points while Christian Standhardinger added dagger by chipping in 24 points for NorthPort.

Justin Brownlee and Stanley Pringle, on the other hand were the standouts for the Gin Kings; scoring 24 and 21 points, respectively.

NorthPort leads the best-of-five series, 1-0. Game 2 will be played on Monday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
