PH adds silver, bronze in fencing

PASAY -- Two more medals were in the bag for the Philippine fencing team as the second day of the competition concluded inside the World Trade Center on Wednesday.

Hanniel Abella finished second in the women's epee tournament after being defeated by Singapore's Kiria Tikanah Abdul Rahman.

Abella earlier defeated Vietnam's Nguyen Nhu Hoa in the semifinals with a 15-10 outing, earning a sure silver medal for the Philippines.

Abdul Rahman, however, had other plans as she denied Abella a gold medal finish with a 15-12 performance.

Nathaniel Perez, meanwhile, reached the semifinals of the men's foil category.as he dominated Xin Han Cheng from Malaysia with an impressive 15-8 campaign.

He, however, lost to eventual gold medalist Hans Yoong as he suffered a 15-11 defeat at the hands of the Malaysian.

The Philippines has yet to win a fencing gold for the 30th SEA Games, after accumulating two silvers and two bronzes in their campaign.
