PASAY -- The Philippines made a statement to open its 2019 Southeast Asian Games title defense in ice hockey with a 15-1 thumping of Malaysia in the SM Mall of Asia Ice Rink.

Filipino-Swiss captain Steven Fuglister and forward Carl Montano teamed up to open the scoring for the Philippines, dealing a 3-0 lead in the early game.

After the Malaysian first-choice goaltender suffered a potential injury, Montano added more to the Philippines' tally to end the first period 4-0.

The Filipinos opens the second period with another goal, but the Malaysians fought back with a goal of their own, 6-1.

It was the last goal for the Malaysians however, as the Philippines continuously found the back of the net to end the second period, 10-1.

The Philippines went all the way in the third period, adding five more to their scoreboard and ending the one-sided affair with a statement.

With these, the Filipinos led all five participating nations, while having the highest goal output in SEA Games ice hockey history.

Philippines will next face Singapore on November 3, while Malaysia will look to bounce back against Thailand.
