MANILA—In what could count as a prelude to what it can do when it will be its turn to host in 2021, Vietnam captured the last gold medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Vietnam swept the beach handball event, which ended on Wednesday at the Subic Tennis Club, en route to its 97th gold medal.

Vietnam completed the 4-0 sweep of the tournament after beating Indonesia in straight sets, 19-16, 20-10, in the first game of a doubleheader. The result eventually gave the other two medals at stake to Thailand and the Philippines.

In the second game of the day, however, Thailand secured the silver by beating the Philippines, 19-18, 21-16, to finish its stint at 3-1. The Philippines, which fell to 2-2, settled for the bronze in the process.

In the final medal tally, the Philippines, which already clinched its second overall championship as early as Monday night, ended its hosting chores with 149 golds, 117 silvers, and 120 bronzes.

Vietnam, on the other hand, finished with 97 golds, 85 silvers, and 114 bronzes, while Thailand will return home with 92 golds, 103 silvers, and 122 bronzes.
