MANILA--The San Juan Knights once again showed the Davao Occidental Tigers why they are the reigning MPBL champions, scoring an 84-65 win in the rematch of last year's finals at the University of San Agustin Gym in Iloilo City on Saturday night.

The much-awaited showdown between the national finalists turned out to be a blowout early on as San Juan led Davao Occidental, 26-13, after the first quarter following a 26-8 run to end the period.

The Knights then started the second period with a 17-4 run for their largest lead at 26, 43-17, with four minutes left before halftime.

"Siyempre, nagulat kami sa maagang lamang," Coach Randy Alcantara said about their huge first half lead.

The Tigers got their groove in the third quarter and eventually trimmed the lead down to eight, 65-57, with 6:05 remaining in the fourth, but the Knights went on a 13-0 run afterward to pull away for good.

"Lumaban kami sa depensa, sa dikdikan. Naka-match kami, naka-execute at gumana ang depensa namin," added Alcantara, whose team stretched its league best record to 23-3.

Orlan Wamar put up 15 points, two rebounds, and two assists off the bench for San Juan, which stretched its lead over Manila for the Northern Division top seed to a full game.

Fresh from reaching the 1,000-point plateau at home last week, John Wilson added 14 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and two steals.

Yvan Ludovice and Mark Yee each had 14 markers for Davao Occidental with the latter achieving a double-double with 14 rebounds.

Although still ahead in the Southern Division standings, Davao Occidental (21-4) is just ahead by a half game over second placed Bacoor City.
