Davao Occ seals MPBL South top seed with escape over Biñan City

BINAN--Davao Occidental formally secured the first seed in the MPBL Southern Division Playoffs after taking down Binan City on the road, 72-66, at the Alonte Sports Arena here on Thursday night.

The Tigers shut down the Heroes in the second quarter, holding them to just 10 points to open a 33-22 lead. Davao Occidental would stretch the lead to as high as 18, 47-29, midway through the third.

Binan City, however, suddenly want on a 21-6 run to come to within just three, 50-53, with 8:07 remaining in the fourth period.

The Tigers reestablished control of the game with a 9-2 run to stretch the lead up to 10, 62-52, midway through the final frame, even extending it to 11, 68-57, later in the fourth.

The Heroes had one final push, going on a 7-0 run to trim the gap to four, 68-64, with exactly 100 seconds left, but they fizzled in the end as the Tigers scored the last four points of the game.

Kenneth Mocon put up 15 points, three rebounds, and one steal to lead Davao Occidental, which sealed the top seed in the South with one game to spare, going up to 25-4. Chester Saldua added 12 points, seven rebounds, and one steal.

Jed Mendoza made 18 markers, six boards, six dimes, and block to pace Binan City, which finished its season at 12-18.
