MANILA—Bataan got a huge boost ahead of the playoffs as Gary David made his return to the team, and he provided a lift as the club walked away with an 82-76 win over Marikina in the MPBL Lakan Season at the Bataan People's Center in Balanga on Wednesday night.

David, one of the main men in the Risers' regular season domination last year, came back with a bang, scoring 11 points in the second quarter to help them pull away from the Shoemaseters.

Marikina still tried to come back, cutting what was once a 21-point deficit early in the fourth to just six, 81-75, with 26.4 seconds to go, but that was all the team can exert. Still, the rally was what Coach Jonas Villanueva observed keenly.

"Yung Marikina they adjusted. They went with the press, and yun yung isang naging problem namin last game against Cebu. So it shows kung ano yung kailangan namin i-work out before the playoffs," said Villanueva.

Byron Villarias led Bataan, which finished its regular season campaign at 20-10, with 19 points, three rebounds, eight assists, and one steal.

David, on the other hand, finished with 16 markers on 5-of-9 shooting including 4-of-6 from long range.

The team now has to wait on the result on the Bulacan-Bacolod game on Friday night to determine which team will take the fifth seed in the Northern Division Playoffs.

Bulacan, who holds the tiebreaker over Bataan due to its 81-79 win on Nov. 25, can still take the fifth seed away if it beats Bacolod. Otherwise, Bataan will secure the fifth spot.

Von Tambeling led Marikina, which fell to 6-21, with 19 points, seven rebounds, two assist, and one block, while Ato Ular added 12 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists.
