FIBA postpones 3x3 OQT

By Ivan Saldajeno

LEMERY—Although the IOC is keen on pushing through with the Tokyo Olympics despite the scare of the novel coronavirus, one of its qualifying tournaments has been reset.

FIBA announced on Wednesday that its 3x3 OQT in Bengaluru will be postponed due to COVID-19.

Initially scheduled for March 18-22, FIBA moved the OQT to a later date, but the governing body for basketball assured that the said event, the first of two actual OQT's scheduled this spring, will take place before the Universality OQT in Budapest from April 24-26.

Despite the postponement, Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 said in a separate statement that the practices will continue on a daily basis.

Two more FIBA 3x3 events were moved to later dates.

The FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup will now be held from Sept. 9-13, and the FIBA 3x3 U17 Asia Cup will now take place from Oct. 8-11.

In a related development, FIBA also announced the cancellation of the FIBA U16 Asian Championship scheduled from April 5-12.
