A talk with Mindaugas Balciunas will open a series of coaching webinar set up by BCAP president Louie Gonzalez. |
MANILA--Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines president Louie Gonzalez hopes that everyone who will attend his upcoming webinar series will get to see how other countries look at their basketball in a whole new light.
"I'm trying to invite coaches from all over [the world] so that we can appreciate and know what they do in terms of basketball development," the current Jose Rizal University and Muntinlupa mentor said on Thursday during the Usapang Sports forum of the Tabloid Organization in Philippine Sports.
Gonzalez also sees the webinar series as a chance for the coaches to learn from the philosophies of other nations.
"Baka meron tayong ma-pick up sa kanila na pwede rin namang gamitin sa kultura natin," he further said.
First up in the webinar series is an introduction to the Lithuanian basketball system on Saturday.
After the Soviet Union was dissolved, Lithuania quickly emerged as a top basketball nation in Europe, winning the bronze in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and remained in that status despite other former Soviet nations like Russia and Latvia becoming contenders as well.
Mindaugas Balciunas, the director of the International Basketball University in Lithuania, is the special guest in the said webinar.
"I asked Dr. Minda na i-share sa atin how they raise their athletes from the first level up to the elite level," Gonzalez bared what to expect from Balciunas' webinar, implying that he will put a premium on grassroots coaching.
Despite mainly catering to youth coaches, Gonzalez clarified that the webinar is open to all, especially those in the professional ranks who are curious on how Lithuania quickly built a resume in international play.
"Dito mo makikita ano yung nagiging sikreto ng mga European players bakit grabe ang fundamentals [nila]," he further said.
Also joining is Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Coaching Academy head Jong Uichico.
Meanwhile, Gonzalez bared that a coach from Denmark will be the next guest in his webinar series.
