MANILA--The so-called "E-Gilas" will be back in action later this month as the team tries to defend the Southeast Asian title in the second FIBA Esports Open.
Made up of players from Playbook Laus Esports, the Philippine team took home the inaugural SEA championship by sweeping Indonesia last June.
This time, PLE will take on a new challenger as Australia, the winner of the Oceania Conference last season, joins the said conference, which has been renamed Southeast Asia-Oceania Conference.
Aside from the conference realignment, an expanded field will take part in the upcoming FIBA Esports Open as 38 teams will join this time.
"The growing interest received from our national federations is additional motivation for FIBA to further develop esports, and we are very enthusiastic for this second edition," said FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis on Friday.
The Southeast Asia/Oceania Conference games will take place on Nov. 14-15.
All the FIBA Esports Open games will be played through the Pro-Am mode of the latest NBA 2K title, NBA 2K21.
