MANILA--Only a few people thought EJ Obiena would pull off a stunner in Berlin following his fifth place finish to start his season.
But that was indeed the case on Friday night (Saturday, Philippine Time) when Obiena took home the gold medal in the ISTAF Indoor athletic meet in the German capital.
"An unexpected, surreal, pleasant, wonderful surprise. So grateful for this win!" Obiena said the morning after in Berlin.
Obiena broke his own Philippine indoor record he just set last week with a 5.8-meter leap at the ISTAF Indoor, beating the host nation's Torben Blech via the tiebreaker for the gold.
