MANILA--Make that eight for Team Philippines in the Tokyo Olympics.

The national team heading to the Japanese capital this July got a new addition in rower Cris Nievarez.

The Philippine Rowing Association confirmed on Monday that Nievarez secured an Olympic berth.

"We are happy to share that the Philippine Rowing Association received confirmation from World Rowing that we have qualified for the Men's Single Sculls (M1x) for the Tokyo Olympic Games. Congratulations, Cris!" the PRA said.

Nievarez, who won a gold in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Subic, finished fifth in the Semifinal A of the recently concluded Olympic qualifiers in Tokyo and ended up ninth overall.

The Philippines was eventually chosen among five countries from the Asia-Oceania region who will join the Tokyo Olympics, giving Nievarez the nod.

He joins boxers Eumir Marcial, Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio, and Carlo Paalam, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, gymnast Caloy Yulo, and pole vaulter EJ Obiena in the Philippine team to Tokyo.
