MANILA--Ulsan Hyundai escaped a huge challenge from Kaya Iloillo and took a 2-1 win at the start of the second round of the AFC Champions League group stages at the Leo Stadium in Pathum Thani, Thailand on Monday night.
Three nights after only getting three goals in its first round win, Ulsan, despite being victorious anew, had to grind it out especially with one player ejected as a quick response from Yoon Bit-Garam saved the day for the defending champs.
Making his way back to the starting lineup after sitting out the last two games due to an injury, Yoon reintroduced himself in a bizarre manner in the 27th minute when Lukas Hinterseer's shot attempt accidentally hit Yoon's face only for the ball to go past Zach Banzon.
However, Ulsan went down to 10 men as Kim Min-Jun was given a straight red card for a high boot foul on Marco Casambre.
Kaya Iloilo capitalized on the power play when Jovin Bedic fired a volley from long range in the 47th minute to make it 1-all.
Yoon quickly put Ulsan back up front with his 51st minute goal that completed a brace.
Kaya Iloilo still had some cracks at the goal later in the second half, but Ulsan's backline held on.
Stretching its league record to 13 straight victories, Ulsan remains perfect in Group F with the full 12 points four matches in.
Kaya Iloilo, on the other hand, remains winless after four tries.
