MANILA--Goldwyn Monteverde will now officially take charge of the University of the Philippines' men's basketball team for the upcoming UAAP season.
UP Diliman chancellor Fidel Nemenzo made the announcement on Friday.
"I would like to announce that the next UPMBT head coach is Goldwyn Monteverde," Nemenzo said in a statement.
Monteverde, previously the head coach of the Nazareth School of National University Bullpups in the UAAP juniors division, will replace Bo Perasol as the Fighting Maroons' chief tactician.
Monteverde, who was also the coach of the Batangas City Athletics in the MPBL, will reunite with two of his prized players at NSNU, Carl Tamayo and Gerry Abadiano.
Despite the shakeup, Perasol, who led UP to two straight UAAP playoff appearances and a finals appearance in 2018, will remain with the team in a different capacity.
"Moreover, we take this opportunity to also announce the appointment of previous head coach Bo Perasol as UPMBT program director," Nemenzo further announced.
He added, "Dean Francis Diaz of the UP College of Human Kinetics will oversee this transition to the next phase of our pursuit of excellence in the premier battleground of collegiate sports."
Diaz, however, has also been named the chef de mission of the Philippine team to the upcoming Tokyo Paralympics, which means he will have two crucial tasks at hand for the latter part of August until early September.
The said coaching change has been speculated for the past few months.
