Pacific Water stuns Glutagence in major WNBL upset

By Ivan Saldajeno

MANILA—Glutagence's early dominance in the WNBL season came to an end on Saturday after Pacific Water pulled off a huge 71-61 upset at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Jollina Go had the last laugh over Raiza Dy in their scoring showdown even as Snow Peñaranda nearly set history as the Water Queens finally barged into the win column at the expense of the erstwhile unbeaten Glow Boosters.

After Glutagence slightly got the better of a tight first quarter with a 15-14 advantage, Pacific Water held them to just 10 second quarter points and entered halftime ahead, 34-25.

The Water Queens would pull away from the Glow Boosters in the second half and even extended their lead to 18, 64-46, with 5:53 left in the fourth quarter.

Glutagence had one final push, going on a 13-4 run to cut the lead down to nine, 68-59, with 1:20 remaining, but the team could not complete the comeback, and Go scored two free throws to seal it for Pacific Water.

Go finished with 27 points on 8-of-15 shooting including a 6-for-10 clip from three-point range, five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks for the Water Queens, who moved up to 1-4.

Peñaranda and Cara Buendia each tallied 13-point double-doubles, but Peñaranda, who grabbed 16 boards, came close to becoming only the second Filipino baller to achieve a quadruple-double as she also dished out nine assists and made seven steals.

Dy came up with 28 markers on 13-of-24 shots, nine rebounds, three dimes, four steals, and one block for the Glow Boosters, who fell to 3-1.

The result leaves 2-0 Parañaque as the only undefeated team left in the season ahead of its Sunday bigtime showdown against Glutagence.
