CAPAS--Grassroots swimming and triathlon are set for a major revival this year as swimming gear brand Finis will hold two sporting events mainly for kids this weekend at the New Clark City athletic grounds here.

The growing confidence among the young ones today due to the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination for them prompted Finis to map out the plans for its short course swimming event and kiddie triathlon.

First up is the Luzon leg of the 2022 Finis Short Course Swim Competition Series beginning on Saturday.

Capping the special sports weekend here is the Kids of Steel Triathlon on Sunday.

Finis Philippines managing director Vince Garcia said that the events aim to bring back the kids' competitive nature after they were forced to stay at home for two years due to the pandemic.

“Our hearts go out to all kids that were cooped up for two years. It has affected their social skills in interacting with other kids, as well as other people. When Level 1 restrictions of the pandemic were announced, we thought that it was the perfect time to have the kids finally come out and play. Sports is very important to hone the life skills of kids and we should all nurture that,” Garcia said.

The two aforementioned events are only the start of a one-year partnership between NCC and Finis that will see the former hosting Finis-sponsored events including the national finals of the Finis Short Course Swim Competition Series in June.

“We at the BCDA (Bases Conversion and Development Authority) would like to thank Finis Philippines for choosing New Clark City as their venue of choice for its competitions and training camps. With the country now shifting to the new normal, the BCDA is looking forward to opening its doors to more swimmers and athletes in New Clark City, giving them access to world-class sports facilities,” BCDA officer-in-charge Aristotle Batuhan said.

Both Batuhan and Garcia signed a memorandum of understanding during the press launch of both the short course swimming series and KOS on Friday at the NCC Aquatic Center.
