Nenad Vucinic tapped as Gilas head coach for WCQ June window

MANILA—Nenad Vucinic will handle Gilas Pilipinas in their games during the third window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers. 

The Serbian-Kiwi coach, who has recently been named to Meralco's coaching staff as consultant, will take over the coaching chores from Chot Reyes for Gilas, which will play New Zealand in Auckland and India in Pasay during the said window. 

Vucinic, who was Reyes' assistant coach during Gilas' campaign in the Southeast Asian Games recently, will be in charge of handling an 18-man pool mainly composed of youngsters.

Leading the way for the Gilas pool are B.League players Dwight Ramos, Thirdy Ravena and incoming rookie Justine Baltazar.

PBA draftee Will Navarro and Overtime Elite's LeBron Lopez are also part of the roster.

The bulk of the pool is made up of college basketball standouts.

Headlining the amateur members called up to the pool are Ricci Rivero, James Spencer, and Carl Tamayo three players from the recently-crowned UAAP champion University of the Philippines.. 

Also in the mix are FEU Tamaraw RJ Abarientos, Ateneo Blue Eagles SJ Belangel, Geo Chiu, Dave Ildefonso, and Ange Kouame, De La Salle Green Archer Kevin Quiambao, UST's Growling Tiger Sherwin Concepcion, Letran Knight Rhenz Abando, and EAC General Allen Liwag. 

Six-foot-seven Steward Creek High School forward Caelum Harris completes the national team pool.

Gilas will first play the Tall Blacks on the road on June 30 before returning home to face India on July 3 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
