SAN JUAN, MM--Joem Sabandal propelled Adamson to a tight 80-75 escape from St. Benilde to notch its first win in the Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup Saturday at Filoil EcoOil Centre.
The third-year guard kickstarted the Soaring Falcons' 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter to erect a 68-57 advantage and weather the highly physical battle against the Blazers.
Sabandal notched 18 points, four rebounds, and three assists to join UP for the early lead in Group A.
"We did not expect that kind of physicality, but for sure it will help us in our preparation," remarked coach Nash Racela. "Maganda rin kasi right away, the league is sending a signal na kung di kayo handa, mabubugbog kayo."
Cedrick Manzano also chimed in 12 points and six boards for Adamson, while Jerom Lastimosa, Vince Magbuhos, and Ivan Maata got nine apiece.
Miggy Corteza topped St. Benilde with 19 points and six rebounds in the losing cause.
