MANILA—Philippine sports closed Wednesday on a sad news after athletics legend Lydia De Vega-Mercado passed away.

Her daughter, former volleyball star Paneng, confirmed the development just before the clock struck midnight.

"On behalf of our family, it is with absolute grief that I announce the death of my mother, Lydia De Vega this evening, August 10, 2022, at the Makati Medical Center," the younger Mercado, now married to David De Koenigswarter, said in a statement over Facebook.

Lydia De Vega-Mercado, once dubbed as Asia's fastest woman during the 80's, was 57.

Mercado was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2018 and underwent brain surgery last month, but she was in the intensive care unit since the surgery.

Help poured out to aid in the hospital expenses, among the most prominent to pledge were Asia's current pole vault king EJ Obiena and Bounty Agroventures president Ronald Mascariñas.
