MANILA—William “Bill” Velasco, one of the top broadcasters and sports journalists in the Philippines, will be the BC Wolves’ play-by-play English commentator for the club’s upcoming live streams in the Philippines for their 2022-23 European North Basketball League (ENBL) campaign.

The BC Wolves are currently competing in the Lithuanian basketball league (Betsafe-LKL) and will be embarking on at least a seven-game European tour in the ENBL against teams from Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Israel, and more.

Bill Velasco is set to debut as the Voice of the Wolves on Jan. 10, 12 a.m. (PH time) when the BC Wolves go up against Tartu Ulikool Maks and Moorits of Estonia.

All regular season Wolves games in the ENBL will be live-streamed for FREE, exclusively for the Philippines, on the official BC Wolves Facebook page. Game schedules in European and Philippine times will be announced in advance for each game via the club’s social media accounts.

Velasco is a 36-year broadcast veteran, best-selling author, award-winning broadcast journalist and producer, event organizer, and documentary film producer. He has previously worked with the National Basketball Association (NBA), Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), ASEAN Basketball League, Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA), Philippine Basketball League, NCAA, and UAAP, and has also done commentary for over 500 world title fights as well as the Olympic Games.

“We are delighted to sign Bill as our game commentator in the Philippines. We value his solid experience and believe that his familiar voice to Filipinos will help us to reach more fans there. Broadcasting ENBL games with a well-known local commentator is a huge step for us. It allows us to give the fans what they want – to watch our games live. Moreover, we’re already working with local businesses to start offering our merchandise in the Philippines market. We hope you’ll support the Wolves and Juan Gomez De Liano”, – says Andrius Ziauberis, the CEO of BC Wolves.

The BC Wolves is a basketball club based in Alytus, Lithuania, and recently signed Juan Gomez de Liano to its roster last October 2022. Liano previously played for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons (2017–UAAP Seniors Rookie of the Year), was a member of the Philippines men's national basketball team pool (Gilas Pilipinas 23-for-23), and 2022 Most Valuable Player, PBA Developmental League / PBA D-League (Marinerong Pilipino).

JGDL is the first-ever homegrown Filipino male basketball player in Europe and the BC Wolves believe that the ENBL experience would be very helpful in showcasing and growing the young cager’s skills against different European basketball teams.

“I’m excited to be contributing to a truly professional sports organization that is full of talented individuals in a rapidly growing market. BC Wolves is an exciting example for basketball teams all over the world.” Velasco said. “I’m thrilled to be part of their international broadcasts. I look forward to bringing my own A-game and helping the Wolves reach an even broader audience. The team and its players make for very compelling stories.”

Talking about the Philippine sports landscape, Bill quipped “The Philippines is probably the most passionate basketball market in the world. Now, these voracious fans will finally get a regular taste of top-caliber European basketball, a new thrilling flavor for a seasoned audience here.”

Bill is currently a host for “PTV Sports”, People’s Television Network, Inc. (Nov. 2019 to present), a columnist and contributor for The Philippine Star since 1997, and was the creator and host of “Hardball”–a sports talk show that aired on the ABS-CBN News Channel (2006-2019).

The ENBL tournament is in its second season and has grown from eight teams in its maiden campaign to accommodating 15 ballclubs for 2022–national medalists with wide regional and international experience.
