LUCENA—Bataan banked on its defense to hold back Rizal, 70-61, at the start of the MPBL season on Saturday night at the Quezon Convention Center here.
Despite letting Troy Mallillin put up a solid offensive output, the Riser turned their attention to the other Golden Coolers as they pounced them through their tough defense almost all game long.
James Castro made 20 points, three rebounds, and four assists, while Yves Sazon added 12 points, three rebounds, four assists, and one steal for Bataan.
Mallillin had a game-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal for Rizal.
