It was a
whitewash and a stunner in Thursday championship action of the
Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association (ISAA) Season 14 volleyball tournament as
Philippine Women’s University and University of Asia and The Pacific registered
contrasting wins in their respective divisions at the Manila Adventist College
gym in Pasay City.
PWU secured
the men’s championship after the Patriots shrugged off the challenge of WCC ATC North
Manila via straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 26-24, and complete a seven-game sweep
of the tournament.
Armed with
a twice-to-beat advantage, the Patriots had to withstand a spirited rally by
the Skyhawks in the second and third sets but held on with timely hits in the
end for the title.
UA&P,
meanwhile, rose from the ashes to turn a 0-2 set deficit to a nail-biting
22-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-13 success over ICCT Colleges in Game 1 of their
best-of-three women’s finals affair.
The victory, the team’s second against the Lady Blue Dragons this season, moved the Lady Dragons of Pasig one step closer to claiming their maiden volleyball title in just their first year in the league.
In the battle for third, hosts MAC finally
nabbed its first-ever victory of the season, needing five grueling sets to cool
off the UA&P Dragons, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 11-25, 15-12, for the men’s
bronze medal.
WCC then
secured a podium finish on the women’s side, brushing aside the MAC Lady
Soaring Angels, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19.
Game 2 of the women's championship series is slated to be played on June 13 also at the MAC gym. Should ICCT win in Game 2, a sudden-death Game 3 will be played on Thursday, June 15.
