MANILA--Dynamic Herb Cebu hit one goal in each half to pip Mendiola, 2-0, in the opener of their two-leg Copa Paulino Alcantara quarterfinals on Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Ryo Togashi opened the scoring for Cebu after he secured a pass from King Miyagi and slotted the ball into the goal in the 30th minute.
However, it took 51 more minutes before Arda Cinkir found a gap in Mendiola's defense and struck a long-range goal for the dagger.
Cebu had a lot of chances at blowing the game wide open, attempting 19 shots with six on target, but the final scoreline left the door open for Mendiola to steal the series with the second leg happening next week.
Cebu might be coming to the return leg a bit weary as the club will be flying to Sydney for its AFC Cup match against Macarthur FC on Thursday night.
