MANILA--Anchored by a Top 6 finish in the FIBA Women's Asia Cup, Gilas Pilipinas made a huge jump in the latest FIBA women's rankings.
In the latest update, Gilas moved up by five spots from 42nd in the world to 37th.
Despite moving up the world rankings, Gilas remained seventh in Asia even if they beat Chinese Taipei for a spot in the quarterfinals and the assurance of staying in Division A.
Chinese Taipei remained at number 33 in the world and number six in Asia.
The top five in the world remain unchanged: the United States is still at number one, China at two, Australia at three, Spain at four, and Canada at five.
The shakeup began in the sixth spot as Belgium and France switched places with Belgium now at number six and France dropping to seventh.
Brazil jumped into the Top 10 as it moved seven places higher to eighth in the world, but Nigeria, despite also jumping seven spots, barely missed out on the Top 10 as it placed 11th.
While Gilas remains number one in Southeast Asia, their neighbors also made huge jumps in the FIBA rankings to signify that they can still pose a challenge to the Philippine team.
Indonesia jumped 12 places to 51st in the world, while Thailand moved up by a whopping 39 spots, the biggest gain from the previous update, to 62nd, overtaking Malaysia at number three in Southeast Asia despite Malaysia also jumping nine spots in the world rankings to 72nd.
Singapore, though, dropped five places to 93rd in the world, and following Thailand's jump, they also fell to fifth in Southeast Asia.
The latest FIBA world rankings were formalized on Aug. 21 but were only revealed on Wednesday night.
