PASAY—University of the Philippines rode on a furious first quarter to take down University of the East, 84-69, in their UAAP men's basketball clash on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The Fighting Maroons pulled away early on and held a 32-9 lead against the Red Warriors at the end of the first quarter.
However, UE slowly chipped the lead away and eventually came to within 13, 62-49, at the end of the third quarter.
UP eventually held on as they matched UE's offense in the fourth quarter.
Malick Diouf led the Fighting Maroons, now 2-0 in the standings, with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, 16 rebounds, two assists, three blocks, and two steals.
CJ Cansino added 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Rey Remogat led the Red Warriors, who fell to 1-1, with 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and one steal, while Precious Momowei added 12 points, 22 rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and one steal.
