MANILA—The Philippine Azkals achieved their goal of having more than 10,000 fans—10,378 to be exact—watch their match live, but Vietnam was unfazed by the huge crowd and walked away with a 2-0 road win to kick off their FIFA World Cup Qualifiers campaign on Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Vietnam struck first in the 16th minute when Nguyen Van Toan found his way to score the goal despite the Azkals' tough defense.
The Azkals had multiple cracks at the goal to equalize in the end, but in the end, substitute Nguyen Dinh Bac added another goal for Vietnam right at the final attack of the match.
The Azkals now need to beat Indonesia back at home on Tuesday night to keep their chances of advancing alive this early in the qualifying stages.
