ISAA 15 basketball: ICC, ICCT Colleges extend winning streaks; La Consolacion tightens grip of lead

By Ricky Manliguis

QUEZON CITY – Immaculada Concepcion College and ICCT Colleges put up impressive wins over separate foes to keep their respective winning streaks alive, while La Consolacion College- Manila boosted its chances at the top of the team standings in Saturday action of the Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association (ISAA) Season 15 at the Trinity University of Asia gym here.

The Blue Hawks pummeled the AirLink Blazing Phoenix, 86-53, to chalk up its sixth consecutive victory to keep in step with three-time defending champions LCCM in the race for the top two slots in the playoffs.

Toto Ramirez toyed with the ALIAC defense to register a double-double performance of 20 points and 11 rebounds on 9-of-16 (56%) field goal shooting for the Blue Hawks, which also got 15 from AJ Flores and 10 each from Brent Paccarangan and Alex Sam Dela Cruz.

The loss was the Blazing Phoenix’s fifth in six outings, further dimming its chances for a playoff berth. Skipper Sean Fry led the team with 13 points while John Allen Albit had 10.

ICCT, meanwhile, banked on a balanced scoring output led by skipper Jun Reign Baculio in dispatching the WCC-ATC Skyhawks, 80-69, to claim its fourth successive victory in five games.

Baculio flirted with a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds as the Blue Dragons erected several double-digit leads while cooling off the Skyhawks’ repeated rallies at endgame.

Mark Angelo Magno and Melvin Katipunan both cashed in 15, while Noy Arimado contributed 10 for ICCT. Klain Lizan and Adrian Reniedo issued 17 points apiece for WCC-ATC, now at 3-3.

The Blue Royals then got a big boost from the bench as it tamed the Treston Golden Lions, 75-54, to further solidify its stronghold at one of the twice-to-beat incentives.

Point guard Melvin Pineda took over the scoring cudgels off the bench to score 15 points on an immaculate 6-for-6 shooting to lead the defending champions to a 6-1 record.

Christian Alonzo still cashed in 17 points despite getting into foul trouble early on, while Andrey Ober added 14 markers for the boys from Mendiola.

Treston, which played without spitfire guard Rasheen Jose, saw its record dip a little at 5-2. Yvanne Malay was the lone Golden Lion in double-figure scoring with 10 points.

In the other seniors game, Saint Dominic College of Asia engaged University of Asia and the Pacific to a pulsating low-scoring affair before pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 60-47 victory and an even 3-3 record.

Adrian German led the Pikemen offensive with 18 points and 10 boards as the Bacoor City- based squad outscored the Dragons 20-8 in the final quarter even without main gunners Edward Daquioag and Sean Azurin.

Roel Busante and Noel Cruz also contributed to the SDCA cause with 14 and 13 points in that order.

Michael Delos Santos paced UA&P, now virtually eliminated from playoff contention at 0-7, with 20 points, with Val Mercado adding 10.

In the juniors division, AirLink claimed another big-time scalp, this time snapping defending champions LCCM’s four-game win streak with a gritty 90-83 triumph.

Gelris Bulilan caught fire with a season-best 31 points as the Baby Blazing Phoenix went ballistic early on while taking advantage on the Baby Blue Royals’ mishaps all game long to improve to 3-1.

Paul Resara added 16 points for AirLink, including back-to-back hits in the fourth quarter that provided cushion in the match.

LCCM were paced by Alejandro Garcia’s 20 points, with Jian Lampert and Marcus Saad churning in 17 and 15, respectively.

PATTS College of Aeronautics will get a chance to host ISAA basketball action as the league goes to Parañaque City on Tuesday with a four-game offering starting at 9:30 am.
