QC-Gerflor is in hot water right now after allegations surfaced of unpaid salaries. PVL |
MANILA--The PVL has begun investigating one of its new clubs, the Quezon City-Gerflor Defenders after allegations were raised about unpaid salaries.
The ongoing probe stemmed from a series of posts on Reddit accusing the QC-Gerflor management of not paying its players on time with some of them still not getting one and a half months' worth of their wages.
"Mga mars, di pa din kami sumesweldo! Pero may kontrata kami. Lagi lang kaming napapangakuan na next week daw dadating na yung check from sponsor," said the first anonymous Reddit post, which apparently came from one of the team's players.
In another Reddit post, the same player called out three of the QC-Gerflor's team officials, Marvin Gochioco, Carel Duka, and Jordan Tolentino, and asked her readers, "How can we take action? Game na namin sa Thursday vs F2 Logistics wala pa din kaming sahod."
Former volleyball star Mela Tunay then added a plot twist to the Defenders' financial woes when she revealed that she and her "former teammates were also victimized by someone named in this post," alluding to one of the team officials.
While she did not directly reveal who the official was, Tunay said that "Senior Budol" was the reason why she had to call it a career before the 2021 PVL bubble season.
"[You are the] biggest reason why I retired, and the biggest reason why a lot of players choose to just stay in the province and hindi na maglaro. Shoutout sa Senior Budol. Ang dami mo nang nabiktima," said Tunay.
Tunay was supposed to play for expansion club Peak Form ahead of the PVL bubble, but the team disbanded just before the start of the season and she eventually retired from pro volleyball at age 26.
Hours before QC-Gerflor's game against F2, the league issued a statement saying that it would be fair to investigate the team's current financial situation.
"The PVL would like to inform everyone that the situation concerning the Gerflor Defenders and their players is currently under investigation. Rest assured, we are committed to conducting a thorough and fair inquiry into the matter, ensuring that both the team's representatives and the players involved will have an opportunity to be heard. We take these matters seriously and will take all necessary steps to ensure the integrity and fairness of our league," the statement read.
F2 dominates QC-Gerflor in straight sets
F2 Logistics dominated embattled Gerflor, winning 25-10, 25-16, 25-14 for its second consecutive victory in the PVL Second All-Filipino Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig on Thursday.
Coming off a tight five-set win over Farm Fresh, the Cargo Movers controlled the match against the Defenders, who were currently dealing with internal problems. They moved into a tie for the sixth spot with Cignal, both having identical 4-2 records.
“Of course, it’s a good boost for the team for the next game with the defending champions, but I told them that this is good preparation for the next game, and we cannot be complacent,” said F2 Logistics head coach Regine Diego.
“Lastly, it is essential to respect the opponent, not just react based on who you're playing against. I told them that if they get too close to their opponents, it means they are not respecting them,” Diego added.
