Team Gimaca dominates Greenwoods in PCA Open team tennis event

MANILA--Team Gimaca Tennis shut out the Greenwoods tennis team during the 40th PCA Open Tennis Championships at the PCA Tennis Court recently.

Team Gimaca 60 and above headed by veteran team tennis player Noel Polero and Manny Capulong beat Greenwoods on a tightly contested match via tiebreak to draw first blood in the tie. 

Gimaca then won their respective age group categories led by veteran Ferdie Catolico, Jomar Tolentino (45 and above), former PCA men's singles champion Pio Tolentino, Monching Zaleta (50 and above) Cris Inigo, Makoy Guinoo (40 and above). 

Former San Beda standouts Jojo Lirio and Las Vegas-based Jong Demonteverde, who happens also to be a former University of Oklahoma varsity tennis scholar and former Top 5 player in the country, clobbered Greenwood's duo of Dino Malonzo and Pedro Gonzales, 8-3, in the 55 and above category to complete Team Gimaca's 5-0 sweep of Greenwoods.

Other teams included in the Team Tennis are Cebuana Lhuillier, PCA-JK Tyre, Team Elias, Mary Grace-UPS, PNP, and Capitol Hills.

Philippine Davis Cup team captain Cris Cuarto is the overall tournament director. 

The 40th PCA Open men's and women's singles main draw will start on Saturday at the PCA Indoor Courts. And the team tennis crossover semifinals will be on Dec. 2.
