MANILA--Rhenz Abando will sit out for at least a month after hurting himself badly during Anyang's Thursday night KBL game at Goyang.

The high-flying Filipino star was diagnosed with lumbar vertebrae 3 and 4 fractures after he fell down hard while trying to grab the offensive rebound with 4:24 left in the first half of the game between the Red Boosters and the Skygunners.

Video replay showed that former NBA player Chinanu Onuaku nudged Abando by his forearm while Abando was mid-air during the rebounding sequence.

Abando also suffered a wrist sprain and a concussion.

Abando is currently recovering in the hospital, and he has been ruled out of the upcoming KBL Slam Dunk Contest, leaving Changwon's Justin Gutang as the lone Filipino representative in the event.

While he will be reevaluated in four weeks time, Abando is now doubtful as well for Anyang in its Jan. 24 EASL game against TNT at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig, what could have been his first game in the Philippines since his Gilas Pilipinas stint in the FIBA World Cup.

Without their "energy guy", the Red Boosters gradually lost their lead and dropped an 85-81 decision against the Skygunners, who are now bolstered by former PBA superstar Alex Cabagnot.
