MANILA--Teams from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Thailand are set to take part in the first-ever Pilipinas Super League Global Championship Challenge 2024 while the Philippines has just started its regional qualifiers to determine which teams will represent the country in the biggest ever age-group basketball tournament to be staged on local soil.
The tournament for players born in 2004, 2006, and 2008 will be held this July at the Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City.
Canada will be fielding teams from the North America Basketball Association headed by coaching legend Larry Albano and GIGG.
Albano’s NABA will also represent teams from the United States.
Aside from NABA and GIGG, other countries represented by various basketball clubs include Kampi from the United Kingdom, and club teams composed of young Filipino players from New Zealand, Australia, and Thailand.
They will join the Philippines’ representative in the Global Championship Challenge, which will be held for eight days.
PSL had already started its qualifiers in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao with their respective deputy commissioners running their own tournaments.
Former Philippine Basketball Association star JV Gayoso had been appointed as deputy commissioner for Luzon, while grand slam champion PJ Simon had been delegated to oversee the tournaments in Mindanao.
Multi-titled champion Dondon Hontiveros had been assigned as deputy commissioner of the Visayas.
All the qualifiers in the different regional events will converge at the national level to determine the team that will represent the Philippines in the PSL Global Championship Challenge from July 6-10.
