MANILA—In front of another humongous crowd at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, Alas Pilipinas took their 3rd straight win in the AVC Challenge Cup after dominating Iran, 25-16, 25-13, 25-15, on Saturday night.
Alas stomped their dominance against Iran en route to taking the straight-set win that assured them of a slot in the semifinals.
After the match, Philippine National Volleyball Federation president Tats Suzara lauded Alas, now ranked 57th in the world, for its breakthrough semifinal appearance.
“This is the first time that a Philippine team—by any gender—has ever made it to an AVC competition semifinals,” Suzara said.
“Congratulations to Alas Pilipinas.”
Angel Canino led Alas with 16 points on 11 spikes, three aces, and two blocks, while Sisi Rondina added 12 points, all on attacks.
Aytak Salamatgharamaleki put up 10 markers also purely on spikes for Iran, which fell to 1-2 in Pool A play.
Alas will play Chinese Taipei on Sunday night in their final preliminary round match for a shot at a sweep of the said round.
