MANILA--Gilas Pilipinas could not finish off Turkiye in their international friendly early Friday (Philippine Time) and bowed down to an 84-73 defeat at the Akatlar Arena in Istanbul.
Gilas kept the game close for most part of the game, even taking slim leads in the second and third quarters.
However, an 8-0 run by the Turkish side gave them an 11-point cushion, 76-65, right at the halfway point of the fourth quarter.
Gilas tried to rally back with an 8-2 run capped by a Justin Brownlee dunk that cut the lead down to three, 78-73, with 1:43 to go.
But triples from Taril Biberovic and Sertac Sanli sealed Turkiye's home win.
Biberovic finished with 23 points on 8-of-14 field goals including 5-of-9 from three-point range, one rebound, three steals, and one block for Turkiye, which is using the midyear international window to build up for the November window of the FIBA Eurobasket Qualifiers.
Can Korkmaz added 12 points, three rebounds, and one assist off the bench.
Brownlee finished with 21 points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal for Gilas, but he went 10-for-22 from the field including a dismal 1-for-7 from deep even as he committed six turnovers.
June Mar Fajardo played through foul trouble and added 17 points, 11 rebounds, one assist, and one block.
Gilas will fly to Poland to play the Polish squad early Sunday (Philippine Time) in their final tune-up game before participating in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga.
