PASIG--Gilas Pilipinas' women's youth team sent a strong statement in their opening game in the FIBA U18 Women's Asian Cup Division B by pipping Maldives, 141-18, on Monday at the Futian Sports Park in Shenzhen.
Gilas never gave Maldives an inch from start to finish even as the Filipinas held their foes to single digits in the last three quarters.
Gilas dominated already by the first quarter after racing to a 43-11 lead against the Maldives, but Gilas' defense haunted the Maldives in the final half-hour, only conceding a grand total of seven points in the last three periods including just one free throw in the third quarter.
Jolzyne Impreso and Alicia Villanueva each scored 18 points for Gilas, which will next face Lebanon on Tuesday.
Ava Fajardo and Gabriella Ramos each added 13 markers with Ramos also grabbing 10 rebounds.
Mariyam Sifan led the way for the Maldives with nine points.
