QUEZON CITY--Filipina rower Joanie Delgaco made the most of her second chance at qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics women's single sculls rowing event by winning her repechage heat on Sunday at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium in France.
Losing steam late into the preliminary heats that dropped her to the repechage round, Delgaco made sure that she remained on top from start to finish, ending the two-kilometer route in exactly seven minutes and 55 seconds.
She was the only sub-eight-minute finisher in Heat 1 as the other qualifier, Pham Thi Hue of Vietnam, came in second at eight minutes and 0.97 seconds.
The top two finishers in each repechage heat will clinch the last rides to the main quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The other Southeast Asian still in the running, Saiyidah Rafaee of Singapore, fell just short of making the quarterfinals as she finished third in Heat 2 at 8:23.03, way behind qualifier Elis Ozbay of Turkiye, who finished the race in exactly eight minutes.
