MANILA--The Philippines got its first good news for Tuesday in the Paris Olympics as Kayla Sanchez booked her place in the women's 100-meter freestyle semifinals at the Paris La Defense Arena.

Playing in her second Olympics, the first under Team Philippines, the two-time Tokyo Games medalist finished 10th overall out of 29 swimmers who joined the event, well within the Top 16 cutoff for the next round.

Sanchez clocked in at 53.67 seconds, good for fourth place in Heat 4.

Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey, who won the bronze medal in the women's 200-meter freestyle event earlier in the Olympiad, won the said heat at a time of 53.02 seconds, while Marrit Steenbergen of the Netherlands was second at 53.22 and Torri Huske of the United States was third at 53.53.

Sanchez, who represented Canada in 2021 before making the jump to the Filipino side, was neck and neck with Huske and even Steenbergen for most of the race before settling for fourth place.

The semifinals is scheduled for early Wednesday (Philippine Time).
