MANILA--Nesthy Petecio's "Walang hinto hangga't walang ginto" quest was off to a good start early Wednesday (Philippine Time) after pummeling Indian opponent Jaismine Lamboria in the women's 57-kilogram boxing event of the Paris Olympics at the North Paris Arena.
Looking to finally get that elusive gold after taking the silver in 2021, Petecio virtually dominated Lamboria from start to finish, banking on her quickness to cancel her foe's height and reach advantage.
Only Shawn Reese had it 29-28, but the rest of the jury, Yermek Suiyenish, Kim Jong-Jin, Jakov Peterson, Mouhsine Soulimi, all gave Petecio the perfect 30 en route to the unanimous decision win.
Host country hero Amina Zidani awaits Petecio in the second round early Saturday (Philippine Time).
Seeded third in the event, Zidani got a first-round bye.
