MANILA--Elreen Ando's efforts were not enough to reach the podium finish in the Paris Olympics women's 59-kilogram weightlifting event at South Paris Arena, Thursday evening.

Ando totaled 230 kilograms, putting her in a tie for fourth with Venezuela's Anyelin Venegas and Nigeria's Rafiatu Lawal.

Ando placed 6th after the tiebreaker.

Despite that, Ando significantly improved from her 222-kilogram total lift in 64-kilogram division of the Tokyo Games three years ago.

In the snatch round, she lifted 100 kilograms in her second attempt, which tied her previous career best.

Ando tried to break her own personal record but failed to lift 102 kilograms in her last snatch lift.

In the clean and jerk round, she successfully lifted 130 kilograms in her third attempt after failing in the first two, which although was enough for the podium set a new personal best.

China's Shifang Luo was hailed as the gold medalist after setting a new Olympic record of 241 kilograms, 107 in the snatch and 134 in the clean and jerk, both also Olympic records.

Maude Charron, the 2021 champion in the 64-kilogram division, took the silver medal place after lifting 236 kilograms overall, and Hsing-Chun Kuo of Chinese Taipei, the erstwhile champ in the 59, was the bronze medalist after she lifted 235 kilograms.

Vanessa Sarno will be the last of the three national Olympians for weightlifting who will vie for the Philippines' 5th medal in her competition for the women's 71-kilogram event, which will be on Saturday at 1:30 a.m. (Philippine time).
