MANILA--NLEX escaped one last attack from Phoenix for a 100-95 win in their PBA Governors' Cup game on Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Up by 23 points at halftime, the Road Warriors suddenly found themselves just up one, 96-95, with 30.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
However, Robert Herndon scored a corner three with 19.5 seconds left to up their lead back to four, 99-95.
Jjay Alejandro tried to tie the game for the Fuel Masters, but his heavily contested four-point attempt just hit the front rim, and Myke Henry split from the foul line to ice the win.
"We had almost the same scenario in the last game, but we were able to weather the storm earlier. Now, we weathered the storm a little bit late," coach Jong Uichico said after the win that pushed NLEX to 2-0.
Henry put up 37 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals, and one block to lead the Road Warriors, now tied with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters for first place in Group B.
Anthony Semerad added 13 points, two rebounds, and one assist, while Dom Fajardo went perfect from the field at 4-for-4 for 10 points alongside five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
RR Garcia put up 18 points, three rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Jay McKinnis added 15 points, 14 rebounds, one assist, and one steal for the Fuel Masters, who fell to 0-2.
