MANILA--At least for the entire 49th season, the PBA is keeping the four-point shot amid mixed reactions from fans and even coaches.
Commissioner Willie Marcial called on everyone to give the new innovation where a shot 27 feet away from the basket counts for four points a chance.
"Subukan muna natin, tapos tignan natin kung maganda ba sa liga o hindi para magkaroon ng bagong innovation at tignan natin kung sasaya ang mga fans," Marcial said during Day 1 of the PBA Media Day on Monday at the Le Parc Event Hall in Pasay.
An added twist to the last two PBA All-Star Games, the league now looks to make this a part of the regular game.
However, aware of the early feedback the PBA is already getting, Marcial said that they will first observe if the four-pointer would be a success or a flop before they plot their next move.
"Tignan natin kung magiging successful. Dere-derecho na yun. Kung hindi man, tignan natin kung among pwede nating gawin or pwede ring mawala," the commissioner added.
He then called on the fans to help in supporting the move.
Regarding how the shot will be treated in the stats, Marcial said that they will make a decision about it soon, but for him, a four-pointer should still be treated as a triple.
This means it is likely that any four-point shot made by Marcio Lassiter will still be included in his total makes from at least 22 feet out as he chases the PBA's all-time three-pointer record.
