MANILA—Audie Menzi has been named the new team captain of reigning PFL champion Kaya Iloilo, and he confirmed it himself on Wednesday as the club finally plays at home in the coming days.
Kaya Iloilo will first take on Sydney FC in their second match in the AFC Champions League 2 on Thursday before opening its PFL title defense on Sunday night against Davao Aguilas, both at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
"As a captain, [I'm] one of the role models na rin," Menzi said on Wednesday during the pre-match press conference ahead of the Kaya Iloilo-Sydney match at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Menzi revealed that he will be the new primary skipper of the club, taking over from Fitch Arboleda, who is still on the captain's list as the second in order.
Being with Kaya Iloilo all throughout his professional career since 2016, being the new main captain is a deserving reward for the 29-year-old Menzi, who has remained loyal to the club as he looks to apply what he learned from its previous captains into his new role as one of the "kuyas".
"Yung mga natutunan ko from the previous seniors namin, ginagawa ko at ini-improve ko kung anuman yung best na matutulong ko sa teammates ko and sa management every game," the defender further said.
Still winless in all competitions two matches in, Kaya Iloilo wants to end the early slump this early in its upcoming homestand.
However, awaiting them is Sydney, which was fresh from a 5-0 gnashing of Hong Kong Eastern in their first ACL 2 match.
